Quarterback, Washington Redskins
Alex Smith is a veteran NFL quarterback whose long and impressive career started in 2005 when he was selected with the first overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers. From there, Smith went on to Kansas City where he started for the Chiefs for five years, and most recently has moved to Washington, where he will be the Redskins' starting QB for the upcoming 2018 season.
Smith led the 49ers to the NFC Championship game in 2011, and led the Chiefs to the Playoffs in four of his five seasons. He has been selected to the Pro Bowl three times.
While at University of Utah, Smith was named Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and led the Utes to a Fiesta Bowl victory. In 2005, Smith was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the first overall draft pick.
In San Francisco, Smith played for six different offense coordinators in his six seasons with the team. Statistically, his best season was in 2011, leading the team to the NFC Championship. He currently holds the 49ers franchise records for the most game-winning drives in a single season and the most 4th quarter comeback wins in a single season.
Smith was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013. In his inaugural season in the Midwest, he led the Chiefs to a 9-0 start and the team’s first playoff appearance in three years. Smith had the most wins of any Chiefs’ quarterback through his first three seasons, and holds the Chiefs’ records for highest career passer rating and completion percentage. Smith was named to the Pro Bowl in 2014, 2017, and 2018. His 312 consecutive passes attempted without an interception throughout the 2015 season ranks second all-time in NFL history behind Tom Brady, and following that season he was awarded the Derrick Thomas Award, given to the Chiefs Most Valuable Player. In 2017, Smith had the highest regular season passer rating in the NFL with 104.7.
Following the 2017 season, Smith was traded to the Washington Redskins, for whom he will start as quarterback in the coming 2018 season.
Off the field, Smith is recognized as the founder of the Alex Smith Foundation, an organization dedicated to aiding foster kids in the transition to adulthood by developing and promoting mentoring, education, housing, internship, job, and advocacy programs. The organization has been praised for its financial accountability, donating 91% of its proceeds to the causes it supports.
