Biography

Ben Sargent is an artist, chef, builder, and true renaissance man. He now hosts Backyard Goldmine on DIY Channel. After building his own barn in Vermont, Ben was inspired to travel around the country to transform old barns, broken sheds, and other eyesores into newly revived and redesigned rental properties, providing a stylish new source of income for their owners.

Ben is the former host the Cooking Channel’s Hook, Line and Dinner, which aired for four seasons. In his show, Ben took viewers on a coastal road trip uncovering the secrets and stories of expert fisherman, sharing their seafood specialties and highlighting the awe-inspiring journey from sea-to-table.

In 2001, Ben opened Hurricane Hopeful, which featured his famous chowders and lobster rolls. His website, led to an online cooking series and a chronicle of his culinary adventures.  Ben has appeared on Food Network’s Throwdown with Bobby Flay and on Cooking Channel’s United Tastes of America. Food Network fans can also look forward to seeing Ben as a competitor on Chopped and a judge on Iron Chef America.

He released his first cookbook, The Catch: Sea-to-Table Recipes in 2013.

Ben currently lives in Brooklyn, New York, where he fishes for striped bass along the East River. He is the creator of the Brooklyn Fishing Derby and his alter ego Doctor Klaw, of the Underground Lobster Pound, has reached cult status. When not in New York or on the road, Ben spends time in Londonderry, Vermont, working on his family farm, freshwater fishing and riding his old motorcycle.
