Carlos López Estrada is an Academy Award-nominated filmmaker from Mexico City whose work spans independent film, animation, documentaries, television, music, and live immersive experiences. Widely recognized for his distinctive visual storytelling, he has built a career that bridges acclaimed independent features with major studio productions.
His debut feature, Blindspotting, premiered on opening night at the Sundance Film Festival before being released by Lionsgate. The film earned him a Directors Guild of America nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film. His follow-up, Summertime, also premiered on opening night at Sundance two years later, with Variety calling it "the most inspirational movie of the year." Carlos's third feature, Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon, received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.
During his time at Disney, Carlos served on the Story Trust for Frozen 2, Encanto, Strange World, and Wish, for which he also originated the story. His documentary Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival before its release on HBO. He was also tapped to direct Paramount and Bad Robot's reimagining of the beloved Japanese anime Your Name.
