    Biography

Dev Patel is an Oscar-nominated, BAFTA Award-winning British actor who catapulted to global success and appreciation in 2008, when he starred in the Academy Award-winning film Slumdog Millionaire directed by Danny Boyle. Patel received rave reviews for his performance, which garnered several award wins including the National Board of Review Award for Best Breakthrough Performance, The British Independent Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer, The Broadcast Film Critics’ Choice Award for Best Young Actor, and The Chicago & Washington Film Critics' Awards for Most Promising Performer. In this film, Patel’s character recounts his upbringing in the slums of India while he is accused of cheating on the Indian version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” Since then, Patel has expanded his repertoire with acclaimed roles on both the big and small screen.

Most recently, Patel wrapped a decade-long journey by releasing the action-thriller film Monkey Man, which he directed, wrote, produced, and starred in. Inspired by the legend of Hanuman, the film centers on the Kid (Patel), who is on a quest for vengeance against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother and continue to systemically victimize the poor and powerless. The film has a global cast that includes Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, and Sikandar Kher, among others. He was included in Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World for 2024.

Patel also recently appeared in a lead role in the ensemble for Wes Anderson’s Netflix film The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. Patel starred alongside Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, and Ben Kingsley. This on-screen adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved novel by the same name was awarded Best Live Action Short Film at the 96th Academy Awards.

Patel is also an Executive Producer, on behalf of his production company, Minor Realm, on the 2024 Oscar nominated Documentary Feature film entitled To Kill a Tiger, depicting an Indian family’s heart-wrenching fight for justice after their 13-year-old daughter is sexually assaulted in a rural village in India.

Patel can next be seen starring in Rabbit Trap, an indie thriller following married musicians, Daphne and Darcy Davenport, who relocate to an isolated cabin to complete their new album and become disconnected from reality after recording a mystical sound. Patel, who also serves as an executive producer on the film, stars alongside Rosy McEwen and Jade Croot.

In 2021, Patel starred in A24’s The Green Knight for director David Lowery alongside Alicia Vikander and Joel Edgerton. The fantasy was a re-telling of the medieval tale of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

Patel also starred as the titular character in Director Armando Iannucci’s The Personal History of David Copperfield, opposite Tilda Swinton, Peter Capaldi, and Hugh Laurie. Based on the novel of the same name, the film is a modern take on Charles Dickens's classic tale of a young orphan who is able to triumph over many obstacles.

In March 2019, Patel starred in and executive produced Anthony Maras’ Hotel Mumbai, opposite Armie Hammer and Jason Isaacs. Patel captured the screen as a worthy contender, garnering acting nominations from the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild, and Critics Choice awards. Additionally, Patel took home the Supporting Actor award at the 2017 BAFTAs.

On the small screen, Patel can be seen in Amazon Studios’ anthology series Modern Love based on the popular New York Times column and weekly podcast. Created by filmmaker John Carney and produced by Storied Media Group and The New York Times, the series consists of half-hour episodes that “explore love in all of its complicated and beautiful forms.”
