Diplomat, Podcaster, Policy Powerhouse; Former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs
For over 40 years, The Honorable James P. Rubin has been at the heart of global affairs—whether at the diplomatic table shaping and implementing U.S. foreign policy, at the head of a classroom training the next set of global leaders, or behind a microphone playing “explainer in chief” while breaking down complex international challenges for the masses.
From 2022 to early 2025, Rubin served as a senior strategist and adviser to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, advising on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, rising tensions with China, and the crisis in Gaza following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. As Special Envoy and Coordinator of the Global Engagement Center, he led U.S. policy to counter disinformation warfare campaigns by Russia and China—making digital diplomacy part of our frontline defense.
Before that, he was Diplomatic Counsellor to the OECD’s Secretary General in Paris, helping navigate a world of shifting power dynamics and economic headwinds. Rubin’s career spans the Clinton administration, where he served as Assistant Secretary of State and top spokesman for U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. He was even dispatched to Kosovo in 1999 to help lead negotiations to disarm the KLA.
But his influence extends beyond the walls of government buildings. Rubin has taught at Columbia, Oxford, and LSE; helped launch and led media ventures like Bloomberg View; anchored for Sky News and PBS; and contributed to The New York Times, The Economist, and Foreign Affairs. Whenever international news breaks, chances are Rubin has sharp insights to share about it.
One of his most popular ventures is serving as the co-host of The Ex-Files, a witty and insightful podcast examining global affairs—alongside his ex-wife, CNN’s Christiane Amanpour. One critic dubbed it “a brilliant listen.”
He’s advised presidents and senior government officials; negotiated with foreign leaders on some of the most contentious international challenges; received the Distinguished Service Award, the State Department’s highest honor; and holds degrees from Columbia and won its John Jay Award for Distinguished Professional Achievement.
From war rooms to newsrooms to classrooms, James P. Rubin brings clarity, wit, and serious credentials to the world’s most complex challenges—and makes it all accessible to broad audiences.
With wars in Europe and the Middle East, rising tensions with China, and the spread of disinformation reshaping public trust, there has never been a time in American policy history with more questions, and the world feels more unpredictable than ever. Drawing on four decades at the center of diplomacy, media, and policy, Jamie Rubin unpacks today’s defining global crises in clear, relatable terms. More than a news briefing, his talk reveals how these shifts impact economies, businesses, and communities and what leaders across sectors can do to stay resilient, adaptable, and ahead of change.
