Grammy-Nominated Singer, Songwriter, Author, and Philanthropist

Grammy-Nominated Singer, Songwriter, Author, and Philanthropist
Three-time Grammy®-nominated singer/songwriter and author KEM, ascended from the deep grasp of addiction and homelessness on the streets of Detroit to find himself among the legendary icons etched atop Motown’s marquee of music history.
KEM’s body of work is a confluence of sensuous, hook-laden grooves that sparkle beneath his distinctive and transfixing vocals. His beautifully expressive lyricism – overflowing with love, emotion, and hopefulness – soothes and uplifts the soul.
Treasured as one of the redefining voices of contemporary R&B, he has been compared to renowned artists such as Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, Al Jarreau, and Marvin Gaye.
Blessed as a natural born storyteller and lyricist, KEM’s musical gifts, heavenly instrument and unwavering faith guided him through impenetrably dark days of depression, addiction, and homelessness. During those times, KEM draped his talents atop his emotional palette of pain, and expressed his deep-rooted longings and harbored love, through song.
While isolated by the emotional thunderstorm that permeated his childhood, KEM found refuge, solace, and acceptance in his love affair with music, and brought the art form to life as a young man. He developed a deep passion for articulating himself fully in his music, in direct contrast to his mostly repressed and unexpressive daily life.
KEM’s intimate relationship with his music intensified as he composed reflective lyrics directly informed by his life experiences – and enveloped them with his signature vocals and melodic expressions. His songs became the conversations that he was otherwise unable to communicate. For two decades, millions have responded with reciprocated love and allegiance to his artistry – his disarming and honest lyrics, his distinctive voice, and his magnanimous on-stage presence.
His valiant transformation from a homeless young man – in and out of jail and serving his addictions on the banks of the Detroit River at age nineteen – to his status as one of R&B’s most cherished artists, can be witnessed through the poignant and powerful progression of KEM’s music catalog. Perfecting songs (that would later appear on his debut album, KEMISTRY) on pianos in homeless shelters would revitalize his spirit between daily stints of trekking the streets to find his next high and his next meal, often out of garbage cans.
Fine-tuning his music was the golden thread that would deliver him through the darkest valleys of despair to sobriety. On his 23rd birthday in 1990, as KEM nursed a 40-ounce bottle of Colt 45 on the banks of the Detroit River, he experienced a revelation – to surrender his approach to life and instead, to be guided by faith. It became a milestone moment that would dramatically propel him toward his destiny as one of music’s most important and cherished voices.
In AA meetings, KEM would meet men like himself verbalizing their feelings, eventually prompting him to discover his own voice in conversation. Blue-collar grinds in the Motor City – including waiting tables at the Ritz-Carlton and moonlighting as a wedding singer – served as character-building steppingstones after losing his formative years to the haze of addiction.
Throughout KEM’s journey of self-discovery, he transformed his most private emotions into song, and independently released and distributed his first album, KEMISTRY. The radio success of his first single, “Love Calls,” the volume of CD sales, and his unique sound led him to a deal with Motown Records – more than a decade after becoming clean and sober.
Two decades after signing his deal with Motown, KEM authored his first memoir, “Share My Life: A Journey of Love, Faith, and Redemption.” He chronicles his revealing and remarkable transformative journey as a young boy struggling with feelings of worthlessness – to self-discovery and self-development – and becoming a man willing to put everything on the line to follow his purpose.
Over the course of a still-burgeoning career, the increasing elevation of KEM’s artistry has magnetized an ever-expanding devoted fan base – drawn to his signature sound and the vulnerability, passion, and spirituality he consistently delivers through chart-topping compositions.
KEM’s sold-out national tours and international shows have led to his becoming one of the most coveted and successful touring artists today. The globally-renowned R&B singer, songwriter, and musician has amassed: one Platinum-selling album (KEM: ALBUM II); two Gold-selling albums (KEMISTRY; INTIMACY); three GRAMMY® nominations; and eight #1 hit singles (‘Love Calls,’ ‘I Can’t Stop Loving You,’ ‘Why Would You Stay,’ ‘It’s You,’ ‘Nobody,’ ‘Lie To Me,’ ‘Live Out Your Love,’ ft. Toni Braxton, and ‘Stuck On You’).
With his chiseled stature, distinctive voice, and gentle, yet commanding presence, KEM has delivered dynamic performances that have enthralled millions and garnered roaring ovations from his rapidly growing fan base. He has performed at the BET Awards and the Soul Train Awards, has captivated audiences at major corporate events, and remains in high demand by a growing legion of music enthusiasts.
He was featured during Super Bowl XL events in Detroit and has performed on the Tom Joyner Fantastic Voyage Cruise, Stevie Wonder’s Room Full of Toys, Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, and delivered an electrifying performance during Black Music Month at the White House.
KEM’s story has been featured in the biographical series “Being” on BET and in “Interludes” on TV One, and his first-hand oral history, housed at the Library of Congress, was captured by “The HistoryMakers,” a documentation and preservation of the African American testimony.
His musical talent remains widely sought after by many of the world’s leading artists and filmmakers. KEM wrote and performed “Tonight” on the popular soundtrack of the Tyler Perry movie, “Madea’s Family Reunion,” and his remake of Nat King Cole’s song “Fascination” is featured in the Antonio Banderas movie, “Take the Lead.” He also wrote and performed the theme song for television’s “Steve Harvey” daytime talk show.
KEM made his acting debut in the 2011 remake of the 1976 classic, “Sparkle,” about a singing trio trying to make it in Detroit in the 1960s. The film starred Jordin Sparks, Mike Epps, and Whitney Houston, with KEM playing the role of club owner and emcee ‘Buddy.’ He appeared in scenes that were filmed at Cliff Bell’s Jazz & Blues Bar and the Masonic Temple in Detroit.
KEM continues to elevate the R&B landscape with his serenely powerful presence, revelatory voice, and time-tested songs. While the longevity of his career has been fueled by his tireless drive to deliver stirring confessional music to his deeply loyal fans across the world, the generosity of his spirit extends through his sustained commitment to philanthropy. He has been honored by the New York Urban League as a Frederick Douglass Awardee, by the Detroit Urban League as a Community Service Awardee and by Reverend Jesse Jackson at Detroit’s MLK Day “Let Freedom Ring” event for his humanitarian work.
In 2012, KEM founded Mack & Third, Inc., a non-profit organization whose mission is built on the premise that no basic human need should go unmet due to a lack of resources. Mack & Third provides funding to humanitarian aid organizations related to homelessness; hunger; substance abuse; domestic violence; natural disasters; education; and other worthwhile causes. To further support his vision, KEM launched the “Mack & Third LIVE” event, a large-scale, all-day concert fundraiser and food drive to benefit and recognize Detroit’s homeless citizens. Past events have been co-headlined by The O’Jays, Maze (featuring Frankie Beverly), and Morris Day & The Time, and featured numerous local artists. All told, the event provided free, hot meals to thousands of homeless men, women, and children who were designated as the event’s VIPs; distributed more than 250,000 canned goods; and was attended by more than 100,000 fans, all drawn by KEM’s beautifully expressive musical and philanthropic soul.
