Former Senior CIA, White House, and State Department Official
Ned Price most recently served as the Deputy to the U.S. Representative to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, overseeing the U.S. Mission to the United Nations’ Washington office and, as a Deputy Cabinet-level official, serving as a standing member of the National Security Council’s Deputies Committee. In this role, he spent countless hours in the White House Situation Room, deliberating the most daunting and pressing national security and foreign policy challenges. Ned began his most recent stint in government at the Department of State in January 2021 when he assumed the role of Department Spokesperson, a title he held until March 2023. He then served as Senior Advisor to Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken until he took on his leadership role with the U.S. Mission to the UN. Prior to the State Department, Ned was Co-Founder and Director of Policy and Communications at National Security Action, a non-profit advocacy organization. During the Obama Administration, he served as Special Assistant to President Obama on the National Security Council staff, where he was also the Spokesperson and Senior Director for Strategic Communications. He previously was at the Central Intelligence Agency, where he was a senior analyst and Spokesperson. He has been an NBC News analyst and contributor and has taught at Georgetown University and George Washington University. He graduated summa cum laude from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and received a Master’s from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. He is originally from Dallas, Texas, and is a lifetime member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Eras — and the labels they carry — have helped successive generations understand and navigate the world around them. But the present moment lacks a clear label; we’ve moved beyond the Cold War and even the post-9/11 period that followed it. What will fill this void remains hotly contested among the world’s most powerful leaders. In this talk, Ned Price, who has served in senior roles at the CIA, White House, and State Department, will discuss the current historical inflection point and its implications for governments, business leaders, and investors. He will offer a perspective informed by countless hours inside the White House Situation Room, where he and senior colleagues from the Obama and Biden Administrations deliberated the world’s most complex and consequential challenges. His analysis will help audiences understand where we are — and where we’re headed — to leave them best positioned to leverage opportunities and avoid the pitfalls of the increasingly complex world around us.
Amidst the few certainties in today’s world, one of them is surprise. No government or corporation, regardless of how savvy and informed, can be prepared for every contingency. What matters is how well they are prepared for — and ultimately respond to — the unexpected. In this discussion, Ned Price will draw on his extensive experience leading through crisis at the CIA, the White House, and the State Department, offering practical lessons for those called on to navigate uncertainty and the surprises it often brings. He will extrapolate from some of the more notable challenges of the past Obama and Biden Administrations — from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa — in a presentation that will leave leaders better prepared to respond in the moment.
