Harvard University Professor of Economics & Director of Opportunity Insights
Raj Chetty is the William A. Ackman Professor of Economics at Harvard University and the Director of Opportunity Insights, a research team at Harvard that seeks to answer one question: What can be done to help more people realize the American dream of upward income mobility? Chetty and his colleagues mine big data -- from sources such as anonymized tax records to Facebook data on networks -- to uncover the science of economic opportunity. Chetty's work has identified the barriers to upward mobility and laid the foundation for changes made by policy makers, non-profits, and corporate leaders to address those barriers and unlock new pools of talent. Informative and engaging, Chetty offers an eye-opening look into the real but hidden forces impacting all of our lives. He leaves audiences with a deeper understanding of the most critical issues of our time and the knowledge and inspiration to be part of the solution.
Chetty’s areas of research are inspired by the issues affecting everyday people, challenges that arise in dinner table conversations and those that make newspaper headlines. His work on topics ranging from tax policy to education and affordable housing has been widely cited in academia, media outlets, and Congressional testimony. One of his most recent papers shook up the college admissions conversation with the revelation of a type of “affirmative action” for children of the 1% at elite universities and that these 12 schools, dubbed the “Ivy-plus,” are responsible for an incredibly significant portion of America’s leadership. With the research came a call for schools to diversify their admissions to enable a broader spectrum of socioeconomic backgrounds in American leadership—our politicians, CEOs, Supreme Court justices—and prevent further concentration of power into the hands of the elite. Prior studies examined how zip code, social capital, race, and even one’s kindergarten teacher affect outcomes ranging from how much someone earns to their health many years later. Chetty's work has also shed light and stimulated initiatives to address the problem of "lost Einsteins" -- bringing more talented individuals through the pipeline of innovation and entrepreneurship, improving their own lives and society as a whole.
Raj Chetty received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2003 and is one of the youngest tenured professors in Harvard’s history. Before joining the faculty at Harvard, he was a professor at UC Berkeley and Stanford University. Chetty has received numerous awards for his research, including a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, the John Bates Clark medal, given to the economist under 40 whose work is judged to have made the most significant contribution to the field, and Harvard's George Ledlie prize, given for the most significant discovery made to advance humankind.
Drawing from years of groundbreaking research, Raj Chetty uncovers the barriers to upward mobility and offers a data-driven roadmap for creating a society where the American Dream is accessible to all.
An acclaimed economist and Director of Harvard’s Opportunity Insights, Chetty delves into the hidden forces that shape economic opportunity in America. Through engaging narratives and rigorous analysis, Chetty explores the impact of factors like zip codes, social capital, race, and education on life outcomes. He also sheds light on the “lost Einsteins”—the untapped talent that could revolutionize industries and society if given the opportunity to thrive—and discusses the controversial issue of elite college admissions.
This conversation is a call to action for business leaders, educators, and policymakers. By highlighting real-world examples and offering practical solutions, Chetty leaves audiences with the knowledge and inspiration to be part of the solution to one of the most pressing challenges of our time: ensuring that every individual, regardless of their background, has the chance to achieve their full potential.
