Civil Rights Leader and Former President of Color of Change

Civil Rights Leader and Former President of Color of Change
Rashad Robinson is one of the leading social change strategists in America. He led Color Of Change for 13 years, transforming it from a small startup into a powerhouse of Black activism and a national force for social change that mobilized millions of people to fight for racial justice. Before COC, he led the media and advocacy work at GLAAD during a period of major cultural and political progress for LGBT people. In 2021, he also served as Co-Chair of the Aspen Institute’s Commission on Information Disorder.
Under Rashad’s leadership, Color of Change was recognized by Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies List four separate times and was profiled by Stanford Social Innovation Review. Rashad led his team to win systemic changes in multiple industries that affect Black people’s lives, including Silicon Valley, Wall Street, Hollywood, Washington D.C., corporate board rooms, local prosecutor offices, state capitol buildings, and city halls around the country.
Rashad’s strategies and leadership have helped: secure the right to marry for LGBT people; take on the financial and media infrastructure that supports right-wing extremists; launch a movement to elect a new generation of local prosecutors dedicated to police accountability and criminal justice reform; and win policy changes at Airbnb, Google and other corporations across Silicon Valley—including launching the historic $7 billion advertiser boycott of Meta and launching the first racial justice audits in the industry.
In entertainment, Rashad was a consulting producer on Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, created by Ryan Murphy, in addition to consulting on dozens of other projects. He also won a Webby Award for Best Political Podcast for his #VotingWhileBlack election year podcast in 2020. At GLAAD, he led many successful efforts to transform the representation of LGBTQ+ people, which included leading GLAAD's rating and accountability system for tracking LGBTQ+ representation across Hollywood.
Rashad is a sought-after speaker, has testified in front of Congress, and has appeared in conversations with Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Hilary Clinton, Prince Harry, Kerry Washington, and other newsmakers. His work, insights, and essays are featured widely in media: CNN, MSNBC, BET, NPR, The New York Times, USA Today, The Hollywood Reporter, The Washington Post, Wired, The Root, The Guardian, Essence and more. He has counseled leaders across government, politics, philanthropy, and the nonprofit and corporate sectors. He consults on a wide range of projects—from rewriting corporate policies to developing TV shows to shaping the strategy for social marketing campaigns.
Rashad’s forthcoming book is a highly engaging mix of stories drawn from the frontlines of social change and a practical handbook for anyone who wants to be on those frontlines themselves. Culled from his decades-long career as an organizer and strategist, Rashad offers vivid examples of big wins and painful losses that help readers understand the fundamentals of how power works in society—and more importantly, how to gain the power required to break through and bring about real change in the world we face today. It will be published this year by One World Random House.
Black history has always been about building a better future for everyone—but today, those achievements are under attack. Efforts to suppress equality, distort our stories, and undermine voting and consumer rights threaten decades of progress. Calls for “free speech” and “fairness” are being weaponized to dismantle the very policies that made America more just.
These attacks on DEI, criminal justice reform, and social programs don’t just impact Black communities—they endanger gains that benefit all, from LGBTQ rights to broader civil protections. Rashad Robinson outlines what’s at stake and shares strategies to keep public energy driving progress forward, ensuring America’s future is not defined by its past.
When liberals lose elections or policy battles, they often blame it on losing the narrative. The response? Double down on messaging, only to repeat the same mistakes and fail again. The real problem lies in how we think about narrative itself.
Rashad Robinson, an expert in framing issues and leveraging media for movements, will outline the five core principles of winning narratives and the common mistakes people make. He’ll also reveal how better instincts, practices, and infrastructure are crucial for building narratives that lead to lasting victories.
The greatest strength of those resisting change is their ability to convince us that change is impossible—that they can’t, won’t, and never will. Their goal is to make us give up. But history proves that change is always possible, and victory is within reach. Whether it’s a corporation causing harm, a government system failing us, a leader ignoring urgent calls for action, or even a group we’re part of resisting transformation, no entity—no matter how powerful—is beyond accountability.
The key lies in dismantling the systems that reward harmful behavior and, at times, penalize those trying to do good. Drawing from years of experience battling seemingly unchangeable institutions, Rashad Robinson reveals a bold and actionable roadmap for building the power to challenge the status quo, shift incentives, and win the fights that matter most. This talk is a call to action for anyone ready to confront the “impossible” and create lasting change.
