Biography

Reed Morano recently won both the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Dramatic Series and the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for The Handmaid’s Tale.

That makes her the first woman to win an Emmy in the Drama Series category in 22 years, and she also made history as the first woman to ever win both the Emmy and the DGA award for the same body of work in Dramatic Series.  Her pilot of The Handmaid’s Tale received 13 Emmy nominations and 8 wins in total including Outstanding Drama Series, which was also another historical first for any streaming network.  In that same year, Reed was also nominated for an Emmy for her cinematography on the pilot of “Divorce” for HBO.

Following its release, Indiewire ranked The Handmaid's Tale as one of the 20 Best-Directed TV Drama Series of the 21st Century and Vanity Fair named Reed one of six TV Power Players to Watch in 2017.

Reed’s latest feature film, I Think We’re Alone Now, starring Peter Dinklage and Elle Fanning, won the Special Jury Prize for Excellence in Filmmaking at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, where it debuted in the Dramatic Competition.  The film also was awarded the prestigious Dolby Atmos grant.

Reed is a distinctive director who began her career in filmmaking as a cinematographer and still often acts as her own cinematographer while directing her feature work.  This is the case with her latest I Think We’re Alone Now as well as her directorial feature debut, Meadowland, starring Olivia Wilde and Luke Wilson which earned Reed an Independent Spirit Award nomination for cinematography and also landed her on Indiewire’s 20 Best Breakthrough Directors of 2015.  The critically acclaimed Meadowland premiered in competition at the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival.

In 2011, Reed was honored with the Kodak Vision award for cinematography at the Women in Film Crystal + Lucy awards, and in past years has been named one of Variety's "10 Cinematographers to Watch", one of Ioncinema’s "American New Wave 25", and one of five innovative cinematographers in ICG Magazine's "Generation Next" Spotlight.  In 2012, Reed's work was featured in Indiewire's "On the Rise '12: 5 Cinematographers Lighting Up Screens in Recent Years." and "Heroines of Cinema: An A-Z of Women in Film in 2012."   Some of Reed's thoughts on the digital revolution and how it has affected filmmaking are featured in Keanu Reeves' acclaimed documentary Side by Side.   She was also honored to be featured in Kodak's long-running on film series.

In 2013, Reed became the youngest active member inducted into the prestigious American Society of Cinematographers as well as 1 out of only 12 female cinematographer members at the time.  Later that year, Reed was invited to become a member of the cinematographer’s branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

In 2015, Reed was honored at the Fusion Film Festival and named their 2015 Woman of the Year.

Reed is currently finishing post on “The Rhythm Section”, a global espionage thriller/character study that she directed starring Blake Lively, Jude Law and Sterling K. Brown — produced by Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson for Paramount Pictures.
