Biography

Zoanne Clack, MD, MPH  is an executive producer and showrunner for Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19. An emergency medicine physician turned TV writer and showrunner, Clack is best known for her influential writing roles on these critically acclaimed ABC-TV series, where she combines her medical background and artistic flair, offering a unique and authentic touch. As a writer/producer on Grey's Anatomy since the show began, she has played an integral role in the show's longevity and cultural impact. She uses her knowledge of entertainment education to promote global public health issues through the media, advocating for representation and inclusivity and providing diverse characterizations as well as poignant social commentary. Clack is co-chair of the Norman Lear Center’s Hollywood, Health & Society program at USC’s Annenberg School of Journalism and serves as a trustee on the Producer-WGA Pension & Health Fund. She is a former board and negotiating committee member of the WGA West, and acts as an advisor for several creative and global health groups, including Population Media Center and Good Energy. In her former medical career she worked closely with the Centers for Disease Control in behavioral and international health, and she has traveled the world training writers and public health officials to use entertainment the educate the masses. 

She and the staff of Grey’s Anatomy won a Writers’ Guild of America Award for best new series. She was selected to receive the National Medical Association’s (NMA) Scroll of Merit Award, the highest honor given by the NMA, which is the largest organization of African-American physicians in the country.  Concordantly, she went on to proudly accept the Leadership and Legacy Alumni Award given by the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), an organization with the goal of ensuring culturally sensitive medical education and increasing the number of students of color that enter and complete medical school. She served on their board as a Professional Member for two years. She has received multiple individual NAACP Image Award nominations for writing, and been on the staff of Grey's Anatomy for its numerous wins for Best Drama Series.

From medical school at UT Southwestern in Dallas, TX, Dr. Clack went to Atlanta, GA to pursue a residency in Emergency Medicine at Emory University. This was followed by a fellowship in Injury Prevention that led her to obtain a Master’s of Public Health (MPH) in Behavioral Sciences. She went on to spend a year with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) doing International Emergency Medicine. Throughout that year, she helped develop an emergency medicine program in response to the bombing of the American Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, as well as assisting in the expansion of emergency medicine to the pacific island paradise of Palau. 

Dr. Clack is very proud to have penned an article in National Geographic Magazine’s issue titled “Women’s health concerns are dismissed more, studied less” for the magazine’s special edition on the future of medicine where she urges more women to speak up about how they feel or what kind of health issues they’re experiencing.
