Mental Health Advocate and Co-Founder & Founding CEO, Bonobos

Mental Health Advocate and Co-Founder & Founding CEO, Bonobos
Andy Dunn co-founded Bonobos in 2007 and served as the company’s CEO for its first ten years, pioneering the digitally native brand movement. The company’s Guideshop model redefined what an offline retail experience could be in the digital era. Bonobos was acquired by Walmart for $310 million in 2017 and is now owned by WHP Global. Dunn remains an advisor.
In 2022, Dunn published a national bestseller, Burn Rate: Launching a Startup and Losing My Mind, in which he lifts the veil on his journey at the intersection of entrepreneurship and bipolar disorder. Burn Rate—named one of the year’s most anticipated books by Forbes and selected as an Amazon Editor’s Pick—is now in development as a scripted television series.
Dunn’s latest venture is Pie, a social app whose mantra is “chronically offline.” The company’s mission is to help people stop doomscrolling and spend twenty more hours per month socializing IRL. Pie is live in Chicago and Austin, with over 250,000 users, and was recently awarded 1871’s Rising Star Award, which highlights the city’s most promising new startup.
As an angel investor and founder of Red Swan Ventures, Dunn has backed more than 150 startups and 11 unicorns, including Warby Parker, Scopely, and Coinbase. He is a co-founder and board director of Monica + Andy, an organic baby-apparel brand created with his sister, and serves on the board of RaisedBy.Us, a social-giving nonprofit.
Dunn earned his B.A. from Northwestern University and his M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He lives between Chicago and Rio de Janeiro with his wife and their son. He is a decent chess player, obsessed with Chicago sports, and a mediocre but enthusiastic tennis and pickleball player.
At twenty-eight, fresh from Stanford’s MBA program and steeped in the move-fast-and-break-things ethos of Silicon Valley, Andy Dunn was on top of the world. He was building Bonobos, a new kind of startup—a digitally native, direct-to-consumer brand—out of his Manhattan apartment. As Dunn’s business began to take off, however, some of the very traits that powered his success as a founder—relentless drive, confidence bordering on hubris, and ambition verging on delusion—were now threatening to undo him. As he struggled to keep the startup afloat, Dunn was haunted by a ghost: a diagnosis of bipolar disorder he received after a frightening manic episode in college.
In this conversation, Dunn offers an unconventional look at the entrepreneurial journey, a parable for the twenty-first-century economy, and a revelatory look at the prevalence of mental illness in the startup community. With intimate prose, he fearlessly shines a light on the dark side of success and challenges us all to take part in the deepening conversation around creativity, performance, and disorder.
Andy Dunn uses his own story to help us all rethink our attitude toward innovation, reality — and delusion.
