Biography

Avery Johnson is a CBS Sports Network Analyst. He is a former American Basketball Coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide Men’s Basketball Team. In addition to Alabama, Johnson served as the Head Coach for the Dallas Mavericks and the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets of the NBA. 

After going undrafted, Johnson signed with the Seattle Supersonics of the NBA. He went on to play 16 years in the NBA, winning an NBA championship with the San Antonio Spurs. 

After his tenure with the Dallas Mavericks, Johnson went on to join ESPN as a studio analyst. He remained in this position for two seasons. After two seasons with ESPN, Johnson was hired as the head coach for the New Jersey Nets in 2010. He doubled the Nets’ win total in his first season as head coach. In 2012, he stayed with the team as they completed their move to Brooklyn. 

Following his time with the Nets, Johnson joined the ESPN basketball crew again. For two seasons, he worked on SportsCenter, NBA Coast to Coast, and NBA Tonight. 

In 2015, Johnson was hired as the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide Men’s Basketball Team. During his tenure with the team, he was able to lead the Crimson Tide to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in six years. 

Johnson is also a founding partner of Allan Bailey Johnson Real Estate, where he is responsible for identifying business development opportunities and developing the marketing strategy for the firm. He also serves as an advisor for a Dallas-based multifamily real estate firm. In 2020, he co-founded Avery Capital, a $100 million GSA anchored real estate fund.
