Ellen Hughes joined the U.S. Women's National Team staff as a player development consultant in August 2023 and helped lead Team USA to gold at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games and 2025 IIHF Women’s World Championship, along with silver at the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championship.
In her role, Hughes spearheads the development of national team players both on and off the ice and serves as a mentor to both the player pool and coaching staff to help advance player development across the program.
A player herself, Hughes was a member of the 1992 U.S. Women’s National Team that took home silver from the 1992 IIHF Women’s World Championship. A standout defender on the team, she was named to the all-star team for the tournament. Hughes was also a three-sport athlete at the University of New Hampshire in soccer, ice hockey and lacrosse, ultimately being inducted into the UNH Hall of Fame in 2012. Additionally, Hughes also received her Master Degree in Sports Management and Administration from the University of New Hampshire while serving as an assistant soccer and Ice hockey coach.
Following her on-ice career, Hughes went into broadcasting, working for ESPN to cover the Women’s World Cup and the 1998 Winter Olympic Games, among many other events.
Hughes also currently sits on the board of directors for The USA Hockey Foundation, the charitable arm of USA Hockey, which supports the growth of the sport in the United States. Additionally, Hughes is an advisor on the NHL/NHLPA WHAC (Women’s Hockey Advancement Committee).
She was also inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2024.
She makes Michigan home with her husband, Jim Hughes. They have three sons who play hockey in the NHL.
