Serial Founder & Senior Lecturer at Harvard Business School

Serial Founder & Senior Lecturer at Harvard Business School
Reza Satchu is a transformative business leader, serial founder, and educator whose work sits at the intersection of entrepreneurship, leadership, and decision-making under extreme uncertainty. He is a Senior Lecturer in the Entrepreneurship Management Unit at Harvard Business School, where he teaches The Founder Mindset and Founder Launch, courses he created to help founders confront uncertainty, make high-stakes commitments, and build ventures with lasting impact.
For more than two decades, Reza has lived the realities he teaches. He has co-founded, built, and scaled six operating businesses across multiple industries, all from inception, with collective exits exceeding $3.5 billion. His career has included roles as CEO, chairman, founder, investor, and board director. These experiences give him rare credibility when speaking about leadership, judgment, and navigating moments where there is no clear answer.
Reza is the Founder, Managing Partner, and majority shareholder of Alignvest Management Corporation, a private investment firm he owns that is designed for long-term value creation rather than short-term outcomes. Through Alignvest, he has founded, built, and exited several category-defining businesses, including Canada’s largest owner-operator of purpose-built student housing, a national mental health and addiction services platform, a leading U.S. fixed-income capital markets firm, and a scaled self-storage business. Collectively, these companies have created substantial equity value while operating in highly complex and uncertain environments.
In addition to his investing and teaching at Harvard, Reza founded NEXT Canada, a philanthropic entrepreneurship platform designed to identify and develop the country’s most promising young founders. Since its inception, NEXT has launched multiple programs, supported over 1,200 alumni, helped create more than 500 ventures, raised over $3 billion in equity capital, and generated thousands of jobs. Through over twenty years of pro bono teaching at NEXT, the University of Toronto, and Harvard, Reza has played a material role in launching hundreds of founders and shaping how they think about commitment, judgment, and impact. At Harvard, Reza is reshaping how entrepreneurship is taught, leading a transformation of the decades-old MBA curriculum around his learning-by-doing pedagogy that moves beyond the traditional case method and toward experience-based founder development. These efforts are now giving rise to a dedicated Founder Development Center at Harvard Business School.
Central to Reza’s work is a deeply personal understanding of uncertainty. Having immigrated from Kenya to Canada as a child, he experienced firsthand how a mix of hope, fear, and the unknown shapes decision-making. That early experience informs his core belief that commitment is not a sacrifice, but a superpower, and that the moments we fear most are often the ones where we learn whether we can truly lead.
Reza’s teaching and research focus on how founders make decisions when the stakes are high, information is incomplete, and the path forward is unclear. He examines how entrepreneurial judgment is developed, how leaders allocate resources under pressure, how organizations scale without losing coherence, and how value creation can align with broader societal impact. His work blends rigorous analysis with lived experience, giving audiences frameworks they can apply immediately.
Reza has been recognized with numerous honors, including the King Charles III Coronation Medal, Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 Award, the McGill University Distinguished Leader Award, the TiE Toronto Lifetime Achievement Award, and recognition as one of Canada’s Top 25 Immigrants. He holds a BA from McGill University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
On stage, Reza is known for challenging audiences to think differently about fear, commitment, and uncertainty. He invites them to step beyond the ordinary, trust their judgment, and take the small, deliberate commitments required to create extraordinary outcomes.
Consistently ranked as one of the most impactful courses at Harvard Business School, The Founder’s Mindset has earned a reputation for changing how leaders make decisions when the stakes are high and the answers are unclear. In this keynote, course creator Reza Satchu brings that same rigor, urgency, and clarity to corporate audiences navigating complexity, pressure, and constant change.
Drawing on decades as a founder, CEO, investor, and board member, Reza shows how the disciplines that make great founders effective—judgment, commitment, and ownership—are equally critical inside large organizations. Through candid storytelling, sharp humor, and direct audience engagement, he challenges leaders to rethink commitment as a strategic advantage, cut through indecision, and act with confidence even when information is incomplete.
Leaders leave with practical, memorable frameworks they can apply immediately to improve decision-making, along with a renewed sense of energy and conviction about the impact they can create inside their organizations.
