Canadian Ice Hockey Player; The Only Emergency Backup Goaltender to Record a Win in NHL History
David Ayres is a Canadian ice hockey player, the first and only emergency backup goaltender to record a win in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL). He is also the operations manager at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, Ontario.
Ayres survived a kidney transplant - which originally ended his dream of being a professional player - and also had a struggle with cancer.
In a game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Carolina Hurricanes, Ayres went from his nosebleed seats to the ice to play goalie for the Hurricanes during the final 28 minutes of their victory against the Maple Leafs.
